The Russians are coming

Always at the cutting edge of environmental campaigns, Red Sea Diving College have been at it again with an all-Russian underwater clean-up of Naama Bay jetty involving 30 divers from both Moscow and Siberia.

The divers - from Admiral Benbow dive centre in Moscow and Ruslan Ri Dive Time in Novosibirsk – brought up over 60 dive crates full of old bottles in phase three of the jetty clean-up programme organised by staff at Red Sea Diving College.- that’s around 2000 bottles! Two trucks took the glass away for recycling. Both Russian groups had been diving on the College luxury liveaboard VIP One.

Why was the clean-up team composed only of Russians? Mark Fraenkel, spokesperson for the College explained - “Many of us in Sharm are fed up with unfocused complaints from within the Sharm diving community about Russians and their lack of environmental awareness. Years ago similar stereotypes were made about Italians and now plenty of Italians are involved in all kinds of environmental campaigns including - for example, turtle conservation projects”.

Many in the Sharm diving community seem content to sit back and moan about certain nationalities lack of environmental awareness rather than actually doing anything about it. Of course within each nationality there are those leading the attempts to preserve the marine environment and those who are less aware - the Russian community in Sharm is no different. Fraenkel continued “it’s easy to criticize and do nothing, but it helps no-one. Much better to help organise those who want to be active and to start to spread the message. Our next plan is to make an environmental video in Russian and ask all flights from Russia and the other Republics to screen it on inbound flights to Sharm”.

The clean-up – conducted at the end of May and under the direction of Dr Mohammed Salem, the head of the Ras Mohammed national park – was the third of such events over the last year. Activists say that another 2 clean-ups should clear the area completely. Large multi-lingual signs are to be erected at the jetty demanding that people do not throw bottles into the sea.

As a result of the campaign the Red Sea Diving College has already had plenty of calls from other Russian dive guides and instructors who want to be involved in similar campaigns. A particular thanks to College instructors Andrey Leleko and Vlado Zivna for helping organise the project.

Going to Beijing
The Egyptian delegation to the Olympic Games is ready for the world's most prestigious sporting event.

Egypt will send a 177-member delegation participating in Beijing Olympics scheduled from 11 to 23 August.

This is the greatest Egyptian participation in the Olympic Games in terms of the number of participating athletes -- 99. The country's national Olympic committees are hopeful that Egypt can make an appearance in this year's medals table again.

Egypt will take part in swimming after the International Swimming Federation approved the records set by two swimmers at the pan-Arab Games in Egypt in November. The federation does not normally recognise records set at the pan-Arab games. Men's handball and field hockey, badminton, synchronised swimming, judo, taekwondu, athletics, equestrianship, fencing and modern pentathlon are the other sports Egypt has entered.

In the Olympic Games in Athens 2004, the Egyptians, against many odds, claimed five medals. Previously, the last Olympic medal for the Egyptians was in 1984 in Los Angeles, a silver in judo won by Mohamed Rashwan. You would have to go back to 1956 in London to find an Egyptian gold medal before Karam Gaber's Greco-Roman effort in Athens.

In Athens, Egypt claimed a gold, a silver and three bronze. Only two of these athletes have the chance of a repeat; Gaber in wrestling and Tamer Salah in taekwondo. The others are all boxers and have retired from the sport.

A very genuine chance for an Egyptian medal lies with Aya Madani, the world modern pentathlon champion. It is hoped she does not fizzle as did former world weightlifting champion Nahla Ramadan who got nothing in Athens.

For the final preparations, Shahine, head of the Egyptian delegation in the Olympic Games, flew to Beijing on Tuesday in order to be there to receive the delegation. "I will be checking the accommodation, completing the registration of players and officials, and checking the technical equipment.

"The Egyptian delegation will arrive in Beijing by turn, each according to their competition schedule. Some athletes who are training abroad will travel directly from where they are to Beijing," Shahine said.

Judo, modern pentathlon and taekwondo players are training in Korea, wrestling in Japan, athletics in Sweden and riding in Holland.

"For the past several weeks we faced a problem in riding but we solved it. Karim El-Zoghbi's horse is of dual nationality, originally from Holland, and the international federation refused to let El-Zoghbi compete (the horse must be of the same nationality as the rider). But we proved that we bought it and gave the horse Egyptian nationality last July. After submitting all the documents, we received the approval of the horse's participation," Shahine added.

Egyptian woman gives birth to septuplets By MAGGIE MICHAEL, Associated Press Writer
Sat Aug 16, 10:45 AM ET

CAIRO, Egypt - A 27-year-old Egyptian woman gave birth to septuplets early Saturday in the coastal city of Alexandria, family members and the hospital director said.

Ghazala Khamis was in good condition after having a blood transfusion during her Caesarean section due to bleeding, said Emad Darwish, director of the El-Shatbi Hospital where she gave birth.

The newborns, four boys and three girls, weigh between 3.2 pounds and 6.17 pounds and are in stable condition, Darwish said. They have been placed in incubators in four different hospitals that have special premature baby units, he said.

"This is a very rare pregnancy — something I have never witnessed over my past 33 years in this profession," Darwish told The Associated Press by phone from the hospital.

Darwish decided to carry out the Caesarean section at the end of Khamis' eighth month of pregnancy due to the pressure on her kidneys. He said Khamis, who already has three daughters, took fertility drugs in an effort to have a son.

Khamis, the wife of a farmer in the northern Egyptian province of Beheira, was admitted to the hospital two months earlier, Darwish said.

"From the initial checkup, I say that none of the babies have any sort of deformities or incomplete organs," Darwish said.

The woman's brother, Khamis Khamis, said even though his sister was trying to conceive more children so she could have a son, the family was astonished when they found out she would give birth to multiple babies.

"We thought about an abortion, but then we felt it's religiously forbidden. So we said 'Let God's will prevail,'" he told the AP by phone.

Egypt's health minister announced that the seven babies will receive free milk and diapers for two years, the brother added.
